About Ripon

David P. Mapes founded Ripon in 1849, and within two years the city had absorbed the nearby commune of Ceresco. Mapes was also a founder of Ripon College. The city is named for the English cathedral city of Ripon, the home of one of its first settlers. Ripon is home to the Little White Schoolhouse, where a meeting in March 1854 helped lead to the founding of the Republican Party.
